Having Fun With Non-photorealistic Renders

Inspired by the wonderful thread over on the Daz forum…

Thanks to algovincian and his thread, which I recommend you check out as he’s responsible for getting me hooked !

I was aiming for something like a graphic novel effect with this, or something like that.

So I have made three layers which I have in Photoshop.

Layer 2 which is a straight 3DL render in Daz Studio :

London 3DL Render
London 3DL Render

Layer 1 which is a 3DL render in Daz studio using the pwToon Technical Drawing shader :

Layer 0 which is made from Layer 2 using Topaz Texture Effects and it’s pencil sketch filter :

Notable things are that the pencil sketch picks out a lot of detail and edges. The straight 3DL obviously brings out the colour and the pwToon one is good for edges and shadow – notice how the pencil sketch doesn’t really pick up shadow that much.

Then in Photoshop layer 1 & 2 are set to ‘multiply’ and I tweaked layer 1 to 72% transparency to reduce the blackness of the shadow.

And the final result is this (click the picture for full size)…

The set I used here was The Streets Of Old London by Stonemason.
